Kris’s interest in animals began long before she considered pet photography a career.
She has always felt drawn to animals of every kind, including dogs, cats, horses, and even rhinos. Her interest in photography also started early. She studied photography during the film era and worked in a traditional darkroom while in high school.
The two interests came together during her second year of college.
At the time, Kris was going through a difficult period. One of the few constants in her life was Shadow, a little red husky who had a habit of getting into trouble.
“She was my soul dog,” Kris said. “She was there for every twist and turn.”
Around the same time, Kris enrolled in the first digital photography course her school had ever offered. Her camera had only 3.2 megapixels, but when she needed to select a subject for her final project, the choice was obvious.
She photographed Shadow.
Even then, Kris did not realize that pet photography could become a profession. That possibility became clearer after college, when she discovered that many other people felt the same emotional connection to their pets.
She also recognized that photographing animals required a specialized skill set that many photographers had not developed.
Kris shares more about Shadow, her love of animals, and her journey into photography on the Furever Photography About page.
